National Emergency Response Agencies
Emergency Management Australia (EMA)
Prime responsibility for the protection of life, property and the environment rests with the States and Territories. However, the Australian Government is committed to supporting States and Territories in developing their capacity for dealing with emergencies and disasters, and provides physical assistance to requesting States or Territories when they cannot reasonably cope during an emergency. The Australian Government, through Emergency Management Australia (EMA), supports a comprehensive approach to emergency management. EMA pursues a cooperative and collaborative relationship with federal and state agencies. In doing so, EMA seeks to encourage an "all agencies", "all hazards" approach to the prevention or mitigation of disasters, preparedness for their impact, response to that impact and recovery from the consequences.
Disaster Assist
A website set up by the Australian Government to give better access to information about recovery assistance following a disaster. It provides information on assistance for current disasters and links to assistance and responses to previous disasters that have impacted Australians, both in Australia and overseas.
Bureau of Meteorology
The Bureau of Meteorology is Australia's national weather, climate and water agency. Its expertise and services assist Australians in dealing with the harsh realities of their natural environment, including drought, floods, fires, storms, tsunami and tropical cyclones. Through regular forecasts, warnings, monitoring and advice spanning the Australian region and Antarctic territory, the Bureau provides one of the most fundamental and widely used services of government.
Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre
The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre (JATWC) is operated by the Bureau of Meteorology (Bureau) and Geoscience Australia (GA). Based in Melbourne and Canberra, it has been established so that Australia has an independant capability to detect, monitor, verify and warn the community of the existence of tsunami in our region and possible threats to Australian coastal locations and offshore islands.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation
The ABC is the official emergency broadcaster throughout Australia charged with providing emergency warnings, important news and information during any disaster or emergency affecting the Australian community. During emergencies, updates will be issued by authorised emergency services such as the CFA, and emergency warnings will interrupt normal programming when necessary.
Geoscience Australia
Geoscience Australia is developing models, methods, information and tools to analyse hazard risk and their impacts which emergency managers and decision makers can utilise for planning and preparation through to response and recovery.
Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)
CSIRO conducts a range of research activities, which have helped to better understand the causes and impacts of extreme weather events.
